ANWAR’S GREATEST FEAR: CALLS GROW TO MAKE AZMIN PM, MUKHRIZ DPM – IDEAS CEO WAN SAIFUL WARNS ANWAR ‘NO USE BEHIND BARS’
Pakatan Harapan must move on from the “old batch” of leaders and let fresh blood lead, said political analyst Wan Saiful Wan Jan.
The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas) chief executive personally believes now is the time for leaders such as PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and his Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) counterpart Mukhriz Mahathir to shine.
“I think they need to move on from all the leaders from the older batches.
“They should find a way to make Azmin the PM candidate with Mukhriz as DPM,” Wan Saiful told Malaysiakini.
Wan Saiful said this when asked whether Harapan’s move to name jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim the coalition’s de facto leader, was meant to make it easier to accept the idea of Dr Mahathir Mohamad as coalition chairperson.
Harapan has currently not named their candidate for prime minister, and the insistence of many top leaders that the coalition focus on winning the elections first has failed to steer the conversation away from the topic.
‘No use behind bars’
Mahathir, who has been adamant about sitting out of the coming general election, has softened his stance on the idea of becoming prime minister again, saying he was prepared to take up the job for “a short while” if there was a consensus in Harapan.
The three other Harapan parties however want Anwar to become prime minister should they win.
Wan Saiful however said Anwar is one of the leaders that the coalition must move on from, as he cannot do much to help in the next general election as he is behind bars.
“It is time they move on. Anwar himself must realise his time is over and he must let go.
“Only then they will discover that Harapan today has more than enough talented and able people to lead the coalition,” he said.
