Inventor of the plastic FlowHive: beekeepers love my product because the honey tastes better — and here’s the study to prove it
FlowHive is an artificial beehive made with plastic frames. Born in 2015 as a crowdfunding project, it raised over $4 million and has now sold over 45,000 units worldwide.
The hive works with frames with partly formed honeycomb cells which the bees coat with wax and nectar. To extract the honey, beekeepers don’t have to open the hive, but insert a tap instead.
“Our invention allows you to not stress the colony at all while you are harvesting the honey,” FlowHive Co-inventor Stuart Anderson told Business Insider UK.
“On top of that, the honey that comes out tastes better. We’ve had that proven in Queensland University tests.”
These tests compared found FlowHive’s honey to have a more citrus, floral, and confectionery flavour compared to other harvest methods.
The artificial hive has also been criticised for taking the “stewardship” out of beekeeping, which the creators disagree on.
Co-inventor Cedar Anderson said in a statement to Modern Farmer: “You’ll still need to look out for your bees as you always have had, and you’ll still need to check for disease.”

Menurut Penganalisis politik, Prof Madya Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani, Kit Siang patut memberi peluang kepada pemimpin lain yang lebih muda dan bertenaga, selain faktor dirinya sendiri sudah terlibat dalam politik lebih daripada separuh abad. “Beliau pun sudah lama dalam politik, dan bagi saya (beliau) dah tidak relevan. Sepatutnya ditampilkan lebih ramai generasi baru. Tapi sesetengah orang memang susah sikit nak berhenti. “Saya rasa inilah masa untuk berehat, dengan keadaan tak berapa sihat. Bukan Kit Siang saja, mana-mana pemimpin yang sudah tak berapa sihat sangat, tak payahlah,” katanya kepada Antarapos. Ahli Parlimen Gelang Patah itu pada 19 Disember lalu menjalani pembedahan membuang tumor kecil pada buah pinggang kirinya. Menurut Setiausaha Agung DAP, Lim Guan Eng, bapanya menjalani prosedur ‘laparoscopic partial nephrectomy’ untuk membuang tumor yang dikesan ketika pemimpin veteran itu melakukan pemeriksaan kesihatan berkala. Kit Siang, 76, sebelum ini tidak menolak untuk bersara selepas berkecimpung dalam arena politik selama 51 tahun. Beliau juga pernah membayangkan bahawa PRU14 berkemungkinan menjadi medan pilihan raya terakhir untuknya. Beberapa pemimpin Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) pernah mengkritik Kit Siang kerana pemimpin itu kekal menerajui DAP dalam tempoh yang lama, seolah-olah menampakkannya seorang diktator kepada partinya sendiri. “Dalam konteks ini, untuk menolak beliau ketepi mungkin dirasakan tidak sesuai. Tapi bagi saya elok beri kepada pemimpin muda yang lebih bertenaga. Beliau boleh ‘guide’ dari jauh, tak perlu bertanding lagi dan sebagainya. “Namun bagi pandangan orang politik, dia tak boleh tinggalkan legasinya begitu saja sebagainya. Ada perkara yang belum dicapai, dia mahu capai dahulu. Itu yang menyebabkan mereka susah sikit nak berhenti,” kata Mohd Azizuddin –AP
